Key takeaways

  • Match the campaign to the intent. Search reaches people already looking, Demand Gen and YouTube create demand, and Performance Max spans every Google channel.
  • Track before you bid. Smart Bidding can only optimise for what you measure, so calls, forms and WhatsApp clicks are tracked first.
  • Climb the bidding ladder. Maximize conversions once tracking works, then Target CPA or Target ROAS when conversions are steady.
  • Relevance can lower your price. Ad Rank weighs ad and landing-page quality, not just your bid.
  • The account stays yours. It sits in your business name, and our manager account is only linked to it.

How Google Ads works, in plain words

Google Ads is an auction that runs every time someone searches on Google or opens YouTube, Gmail, Discover or Maps. You choose where to appear, what to pay and what counts as a result; Google decides, auction by auction, whether your ad shows and where. On Search you pay when someone clicks or taps to call; on YouTube, per view or per thousand impressions.

The difference from Facebook and Instagram is intent. On Meta you reach people while they scroll; on Search the buyer has already typed “physiotherapist near me” or “packaging machine manufacturer Pune”. That usually makes Search enquiries fewer but warmer, so the two platforms work best together; our Meta Ads guide covers the other half.

Which campaign type fits your goal

Several campaign types were merged or renamed in 2025 and 2026; these are the main types in October 2026.

Search, now with AI Max

AI Max for Search campaigns is an optional layer that left beta in April 2026. It adds three features:

  • Search term matching. Finds relevant searches beyond your keywords.
  • Text customization. Writes extra headlines and descriptions from your ads, landing pages and assets.
  • Final URL expansion. Sends each visitor to your best-matching page.

Negative keywords and brand and URL exclusions still apply. Google recommends conversion-based bidding with AI Max and says it won’t be effective in campaigns limited by budget.

Since September 2026, Google has been automatically upgrading Search campaigns that use text customization (formerly automatically created assets) or the campaign-level broad match setting to AI Max; Dynamic Search Ads follow from February 2027.

Performance Max: every channel, one campaign

Performance Max (PMax) takes one budget and your creative, organised in asset groups, and places it across all of Google’s channels. Audience signals and search themes (topics your customers search for, given as hints) guide it but don’t fence it in, and an identical exact-match keyword in a Search campaign is served first. Left to itself, PMax can drift towards cheap, low-quality leads, so for lead generation we feed it qualified-lead data from your CRM.

Demand Gen: the new home for Video action and Display campaigns

Demand Gen reaches people before they search, social-style, using your customer data, lookalike segments and Google’s audiences. Video action campaigns were all upgraded to it by May 2026, and Display campaigns are moving into Demand Gen as “Google Display Network on Demand Gen”. Google began rolling out a migration tool in June 2026, says new Display campaigns will later be created only there, and migrated campaigns can’t be switched back.

Here is how these types might share one budget:

Regulated categories in India

Financial-services advertisers in India, such as lenders and insurers, must be verified by Google before their ads run, and since 21 January 2026 Google has not allowed rummy or daily fantasy sports ads targeting India. Since April 2026, online pharmacies may promote prescription drug services once certified by LegitScript, an independent pharmacy certification service, and approved by Google, but never the drugs themselves.

How we structure a Google Ads account

A clean structure keeps budgets where they belong and reports readable.

  • Your account is in your business name, with your billing and GSTIN. Currency and time zone are permanent once set, so we choose Indian rupees and India time on day one.
  • Campaigns hold budget, bidding and locations: one per goal, or per budget you want to protect.
  • Ad groups in Search, or asset groups in Performance Max, hold one theme each, such as “modular kitchens”.
How a Google Ads account is organised Your account, linked to the agency’s manager account, holds Search, Performance Max and Demand Gen campaigns. Keywords: match types, negatives and search terms

Keywords tell Google which searches you want; match types tell it how strictly to read them. Google’s own rule: broader match types capture every search a narrower one would, plus more.

Keyword match types, from broad to exact Nested boxes: broad match contains phrase match, which contains exact match. Negative keywords sit outside and block unwanted searches. Broad match interior designer pune e.g. 2bhk interior cost pune Phrase match “interior designer pune” e.g. top interior designer pune reviews Exact match [interior designer pune] e.g. interior designers in pune Negative keywords block searches like “interior designer jobs”
Match types. Illustrative searches; Google decides the actual matches.
  • Exact match [interior designer pune]: searches with the same meaning or intent. Most control, least reach, and an identical exact keyword is served ahead of phrase, broad and Performance Max.
  • Phrase match "interior designer pune": searches that include your keyword’s meaning.
  • Broad match, the default: related searches. Google calls it critical to pair broad match with Smart Bidding.

Ads inside Google’s AI answers

Google lists India, in English, among the markets for ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns qualify automatically, with no separate targeting or opt-out. Exact and phrase keywords match only clearly commercial questions; broad match, AI Max and PMax can also match the AI answer’s context. Negatives and brand exclusions still apply.

Negative keywords and the search terms report

Negative keywords block searches you never want to pay for. They don’t match close variants, so add plurals and synonyms yourself (Google already covers casing and misspellings). Typical Indian negatives include “jobs”, “salary”, “pdf” and “OLX”, and often “free”, unless your offer is free, such as a free home visit.

In a campaign’s first month we read the search terms report weekly, adding negatives and moving proven searches into exact match. Google omits very low-volume searches for privacy, but the patterns show.

Responsive search ads and assets

A responsive search ad is a kit of parts. Google assembles it for each search, showing up to three headlines, and learns which combinations work.

Assets cost nothing to add; clicks on them cost the same as any click, and Google charges at most two clicks per ad impression.

Quality Score and Ad Rank: what decides your position

For every eligible search, Google calculates your ad’s Ad Rank, which decides whether it shows and where. Google names many factors, including your bid, the quality of your ad and landing page, Ad Rank thresholds, how competitive the auction is, the context of the search and the expected impact of your assets. Your bid is only one of them: Google states that even when competitors bid more, highly relevant keywords and ads can win a higher position at a lower price.

What goes into Ad Rank Seven of the factors Google names, your bid among them, feed Ad Rank in each auction: your bid, ad quality, landing page quality, Ad Rank thresholds, auction competition, search context and the expected impact of assets. Ad Rank decides whether the ad shows and where it appears on the page. What Google weighs Your bid Ad quality Landing page Ad Rank thresholds Competition Search context Asset impact and other factors Ad Rank Every auction Is the ad shown? Eligibility Where it appears Position on page
Ad Rank. Google recalculates it in every auction, so your position can change from one search to the next.

Quality Score is a separate 1–10 rating per keyword, built from expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience, each compared with advertisers who showed for the same searches over the last 90 days. Google calls it a diagnostic, not an auction input. We use it to find the weakest link: a Below average landing page is usually slow or off-topic, and our Ads Setup & Tracking guide covers what a ready page needs.

Smart Bidding: the ladder we climb

Smart Bidding covers four strategies that set bids for conversions in every auction: Maximize conversions, Maximize conversion value, Target CPA (cost per acquisition) and Target ROAS (return on ad spend). Since June 2026 Google labels the last two simply Target CPA and Target ROAS (formerly “Maximize conversions with a Target CPA” and “Maximize conversion value with a Target ROAS”); the bidding behind them is unchanged. Enhanced CPC was retired for Search and Display in 2025.

A typical bidding progression in Google Ads Four steps, each needing more conversion data: Maximize clicks while there is no conversion data; Maximize conversions once tracking is live; Target CPA, starting at your 30-day cost per conversion; then Maximize conversion value and Target ROAS once conversions carry values and there are at least 15 in 30 days. Steps 2 to 4 are Smart Bidding. Step 1 Maximize clicks No conversion data yet Smart Bidding Step 2 Maximize conversions Tracking is live Step 3 Target CPA Start at your 30-day CPA Step 4 Max. conversion value, then Target ROAS Values tracked; 15+ conversions in 30 days
Bidding ladder. A typical progression, not a rule: each step needs more conversion data and hands Google more control. Lead-generation accounts usually stop at Target CPA; Target ROAS needs a value on every conversion.

We rarely start at the top. Maximize clicks is automated but not Smart Bidding, so we use it only until conversion tracking is proven; Maximize conversions is then designed to spend your full daily budget, which makes the budget your control.

Google’s data guidance for the later steps:

  • Target CPA: start at your average cost per conversion over the last 30 days.
  • Target ROAS: on Search and Shopping, have at least 15 conversions in the past 30 days.
  • Judging results: use periods with at least 30 conversions, or 50 for Target ROAS.

After a major change such as a new bid strategy, the “Learning” status lasts no more than 7 days, and results typically settle within one to two conversion cycles (the usual time between an ad click and the enquiry or sale). Budget and target edits don’t trigger it, but avoid stacking target changes in one cycle.

Since August 2026, Target CPA and Target ROAS campaigns marked “Limited by budget” aim more consistently at the target you set, so a campaign that used to beat a generous target may now drift towards it. Set targets at the cost or return you actually want.

Moving the Pune kitchen studio to Target CPA

The service campaign runs on Maximize conversions at ₹2,000 a day and records 68 enquiries in 30 days, about ₹880 each. We switch to Target CPA at ₹880, as Google recommends, then lower it by around 10% per conversion cycle while lead quality holds.

Local businesses: calls, directions and walk-ins

For a clinic, showroom or restaurant, success is a call, a WhatsApp message or a visit. Start with location: Google lets you target a state, a city, a PIN code or a radius of at least 1 km around your address. Unlike Meta, Google offers PIN-code targeting in India, which suits businesses with a tight service area.

Google recommends “Presence or interest”, which also reaches people elsewhere who show interest in your area; for a business serving only its own city we often choose “Presence”: people likely to be in, or regularly in, that area. We then build the local setup in this order:

  1. Business Profile linked

Link your verified Google Business Profile to Google Ads. Location assets and Performance Max for store goals take your address from it.

  2. Location and call assets

Your Search ads gain your address, the distance to you and a call button.

  3. Call campaigns

Ads built to make your phone ring: they show only on phones that can make calls.

  4. Performance Max for store goals

Promotes your locations across Maps, Search, YouTube, Display and Gmail, optimising for store visits and local actions such as calls and direction clicks.

Calls are measurable in India: Google forwarding numbers work here, so calls from ads can count as conversions. Google doesn’t show callers’ numbers for India, though, and on some calls your phone shows a Google number as caller ID. Local Services Ads, Google’s pay-per-lead format abroad, are not offered in India.

Your Business Profile’s photos and reviews are organic; we keep the profile complete and help you reply to reviews as part of local SEO.

For leads and sales from video, use Demand Gen: it absorbed Video action campaigns and adds Discover, Gmail, Display and lookalike segments. Two differences matter when you read its results:

  • No frequency caps. Demand Gen doesn’t let you limit how often one person sees your ads.
  • View-through conversions count. People who saw an ad without interacting with it, then converted, are reporting-only in most campaign types, but Demand Gen, App and Performance Max for store goals include them in your conversions. Demand Gen results can therefore look stronger than Search.

That is why we judge YouTube on qualified enquiries, not views or reported conversions.

Conversion tracking: set it up before you spend

Smart Bidding learns only from the conversions you record, so tracking comes first. This is the Google side of our launch checklist.

Remarketing with your data segments

Google now calls remarketing audiences “your data” segments: site visitors, app users, YouTube viewers and uploaded customer lists. A segment needs at least 100 active users in the last 30 days to serve on Search, Display or YouTube, and people stay in it for 30 days by default, or up to 540.

  • On Search we add segments in Observation, as Google recommends: Google then reports how past visitors perform without limiting who sees your ads. Smart Bidding doesn’t use manual bid adjustments, so we raise bids for these visitors only on Manual CPC.
  • Customer Match targeting needs 90 days of account history, more than US$50,000 in lifetime spend and a good policy and payment record. Other compliant accounts can still use lists for observation and exclusions.
  • New-customer goals let Search, Performance Max, Shopping and Demand Gen bid only, or bid more, for new customers.
  • In sensitive categories such as health, these audiences can’t be used.

Our Retargeting guide shows how we connect Google, Meta, WhatsApp and your CRM.

What the Google Partner badge means

Google Partners is Google’s programme, in more than 60 countries, for agencies that manage Google Ads for other businesses. Members meeting the requirements below, checked daily on the agency’s registered manager account, earn the Partner badge; each country’s top performers can earn Premier Partner.

What an agency needs for the Google Partner badgeRequirements as Google states them.

SpendUS$10,000 over 90 days across managed accounts.
CertificationsAt least 50% of account strategists certified in Google Ads, plus one certification per product area with US$500+ of spend in 90 days.

How to check any agency’s badge

On websites, Google requires the badge to be its own HTML snippet linked to the agency’s public Partner profile, so click it: a genuine badge opens a google.com/partners page in that agency’s name. A plain picture, a badge linking elsewhere or one on a social media banner breaks Google’s rules, and a badge may not appear on materials that advertise SEO services unless they carry a prominent notice that Google does not verify or endorse those services. The badge measures account management, spend and certifications, not results for your business.

Questions we get asked

How much should I spend on Google Ads?

It depends on the cost per click in your category and city, the enquiries you need and what a customer is worth. We start with a test budget large enough to collect conversion data, then back what works. The ad budget is paid directly to Google, plus GST; our fee depends on scope.

Is GST charged on Google Ads in India?

Yes. For accounts billed by Google India, GST is 18%: IGST, or CGST plus SGST for billing addresses in Haryana, and 0% for SEZ units. Business accounts must add a GSTIN. Ask your CA about input tax credit and the 2% TDS on advertising payments to Google India.

Can I pay for Google Ads with UPI?

Yes, as a prepayment. Google lists UPI for Indian accounts billed in rupees, currently through the Google Ads app on Android, alongside NetBanking and cards: Visa and Mastercard, plus RuPay for prepayments. Google also offers monthly invoicing to eligible businesses, which needs a manager account.

Should I start with Search, Performance Max or Demand Gen?

Most local and lead-generation businesses should start with Search, which reaches people already looking. Performance Max works best once tracking is reliable or when you sell online with a product feed. Demand Gen suits businesses that need to create demand with video and images.

Why does my campaign show “Learning”?

Google shows it after a major change, such as a new bid strategy or a change to your conversion goals. It never lasts more than 7 days, and results usually settle within one to two conversion cycles. Budget and target edits don’t trigger it.

Are Google Local Services Ads available in India?

No. India is not among the countries in Google’s Local Services Ads help pages. Local businesses here use Search with call and location assets, call campaigns and Performance Max for store goals.

Can Google Ads track phone calls in India?

Yes. Google forwarding numbers are available in India, so calls from ads can be counted as conversions. Google doesn’t show the caller’s number in call details for India, and on some calls your phone shows a Google number as caller ID, so we match calls to enquiries by time and campaign using Google’s call details and your CRM.

If you run my ads, who owns the Google Ads account?

You do. The account is in your business name with your billing, and our manager account is only linked to it. Your admins can remove that link at any time, and Google says the account keeps its campaign history; only audience lists or conversion tracking shared from our manager account would stop working.
